Inspection or viewing windows allow you to check the status of your bees without opening the hive. Each glass window is covered with an inspection door with cedar insulation attached. The doors are held in place with spring toggle clamps. Please note that bees inside the hive live in total darkness. The windows should only be used for quick inspections, and should NEVER be left open.
You have the option of choosing one or two windows. One window is sufficient if your brood area is situated closer to the end, two if your brood area is more centralised.
Brood area is determined by the entrance location. The bees will build their main brood area close to it. Post order and before your hive is finished you can request your prefered location. Either the end plate, side end or middle, the choice is yours.
Although we offer inspection windows as an option, we do not advocate their use. Bees in the wild do not have windows into their world. The use of windows is only beneficial to the beekeeper and NOT the bees.
A study carried out by an American hive manufacturer has proven that bees abscond more in hives that have viewing windows as opposed to none.
