Varroa are still a big problem to us beekeepers and whether you choose to treat for them or not, a simple method of monitoring the mite drop is key.
The mesh allows the Phoretic Varroa mites to fall through the mesh and stick to the inspection tray. A suitable substance for this is vegetable oil, the mites cannot then return to the brood area.
The inspection tray can them simply be pulled out and an assessment of the mite population carried out.
The tray is also useful to see which area of the hive your bees are working. Wax, pollen and other debris will collect on it.
